Life In The Suburbs Can Get Pretty Wild

LEPTOSPIROSIS: A Re-Emerging Disease

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease found world-wide, most often in wetter climates. The primary reservoirs for the disease are commonly encountered in wildlife such as raccoons, opossums, skunks and rodents. This means that virtually all dogs are at risk of being exposed-whether they live in a rural environment or in a suburban neighborhood. As new
communities encroach on areas inhabited by wildlife, the incidence of leptospirosis will continue to climb.

*How can my dog get this disease?*
The disease is spread most commonly by ingestion of water contaminated
by the urine of wildlife such as canals, rivers, ponds, and puddles.
*What can happen to my dog?*
Leptospirosis causes severe liver and kidney damage, often leading to death.

HUMAN BEINGS CAN ALSO CONTRACT LEPTOSPIROSIS THROUGH CONTACT WITH INFECTED DOG’S URINE.

In the past, the vaccine that was available for this disease was not very effective. This was because there are different strains of the disease and the vaccine wasn’t able to protect against the ones most likely to affect our dogs. There was also a higher than normal incidence of vaccine reactions to the old product. There is now available a vaccine for Leptospirosis that is both EFFECTIVE and SAFE.

Our office recommends this vaccine to protect your dog and your family from this dangerous disease.
